Tunis, September10, 2008- Doing Business is an annual report issued by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, investigating regulations that enhance business activities and those that constrain it. It presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights across 178 economies in the world.

The 2009 Doing Business Report http://www.doingbusiness.org, dubs Tunisia “one of the first reformers” in the region and ranks it as first in the Maghreb, third in Africa, and eighth in the Arab World. Results refer to 2008 business activities.

Tunisia is ranked 73 overall, which represents an improvement of 15 places in comparison with 2007.

The report notes that the different reforms engaged by the country in 2007, justify this evolution.

The report is based on 10 major indicators including ease of doing business, starting a business, dealing with licenses, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts, and closing a business. Tunisia has made progress in seven of the 10 indicators and regressed in two.

In the Arab world Tunisia is preceded by the Gulf countries but comes ahead of Jordan, Morocco, Egypt and Lebanon, and in Africa, Botswana, South Africa and Mauritius precede Tunisia.

Singapore is the top ranked economy for doing business.
