Film screenings at the heart of the Medina celebrate tolerance and understanding

Tunis, September 15, 2008- The Medina Festival which has become part and parcel of the cultural life of the month of Ramadan in Tunisia, is dedicating its fourth session to the cinema.

Last week end an event dubbed “The Medina celebrates cinema” (La Medina fait son cinema), was organized at Dar Lasram. The event which was originally scheduled to take place at the Khereddine Palace and on the Halfaouine Square, was moved to Dar Lasram due to weather conditions.

Organized jointly by the association of short feature movies and documentaries, the Goethe Institute, and the French Cooperation Institute (IFC), the event attracted many film lovers.

A mosaic of works was screened, all characterized by their creative originality and artistic freedom, as well as their rejection of intolerance. Whether in black and white or in color, the movies shown, all told a distinctive story.

Most of the films screened were originally distinguished in several film festivals such as the Kelibia Film Festival, the Berlin International short Film Festival, and the Clermont Ferrand 2008 Festival.

Among Tunisian short feature movies retained one can mention “The egg” (2008) by Asma Mrabet and “Autumn” (2008) by Alaeddine Slim.

German movies included notably “The changing Times” (2007) by Thomas Oswald and “Dog Food” by Till Kleinert (2007).

As for the French movies, one can mention “The Kiss” by Stephan Lelay (2005) and “The end” by Camille Thery (2005).

Following the screenings a cultural encounter was organized at the Tahar Haddad Club on the theme, “Writing for short films” which gathered a number of young filmmakers and cinema professionals.
