Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca immortalized in music
Tunis, December, 23, 2008- The Carthaginian military strategist, Hannibal Barca who challenged Rome from 234 to 146 BC, and whose war tactics are still being studied in the world’s most prestigious military schools, is now immortalized in music thanks to a symphony retracing his extraordinary career.
The symphony which was composed by Mr Jaloul Ayed, a Tunisian banking tycoon, for whom music is a labor of love, retraces the steps of the Carthaginian General who crossed the Alps with his elephants, to lay the siege of Rome.
The symphony will be played for the first time in Marrakech, in February 2009 by the Moroccan Philharmonic orchestra and will witness the participation of 15 musicians of the Tunis Symphony Orchestra, as well several European musicians.
Mr Jaloul Ayed who is the managing director and the chairman of the board of the Moroccan External Trade Bank (BMCE), has also composed Mogador which was performed at the Tunis Municipal Theatre in May 2008 and a concerto for piano and orchestra.
A piano virtuoso himself, he has often performed before audiences at Ennejma Ezzahra (the former house of the Baron d’Erlanger, and now the center of Arab and contemporary music)) in Sidi Bou Said.
