Tunis, January 7, 2009- President Ben Ali warned on Wednesday of an impending humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
Evoking the tragic conditions prevailing in Gaza following the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people which has caused the death of hundreds of innocent civilians including women and children, the Tunisian President renewed his firm condemnation of Israeli military attacks and voiced his concern at the incapacity of the security council to draft a resolution putting an immediate end to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Tunis, January 7, 2009- Figures recently released by the Ministry of industry, energy and small and medium enterprises show that Tunisians have reduced their energy consumption by 9% in 2008.
Energy saving sensitization campaigns, including the promotion of the use of alternative energies seem to have paid off, enabling the country to save some 800,000 tons of oil equivalent. The aim of the campaign is to reach savings of 1 million tons of oil equivalent by 2011.

Tunis, January 7, 2009- “Pierre Fabre”, a major international French pharmaceutical group, inaugurated on Tuesday in Radès, near Tunis, its first production unit in Africa.

Tunis, January 7, 2009- Adopted in 2001 by UNESCO’s General Conference, the Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage has entered into force on January 2, 2009.
The convention which aims at ensuring effective safeguarding of submerged shipwrecks and ruins, represents the international community’s response to increased looting and destruction of underwater cultural heritage, which is becoming ever more accessible to treasure hunters.
