2009 Transparency International Index: Tunisia most transparent country in North Africa
TUNISIAONLINENEWS- The 2009 Corruption Perception Index (CPI) just released by Transparency International, ranks Tunisia 65 th worldwide out of 180 countries and territories in terms of public sector transparency.
Tunisia, which is credited with a score of 4,2 is the least corrupt country in North Africa and precedes Morocco(89), Algeria (111), Egypt (also 111 ) and Libya (130).
Tunisia is ranked 7 th among Arab countries and does better than Kuwait (66), but also Croatia (66), Greece (71), and Brazil (75).
The CPI is based on 13 sources from experts reports from10 independent institutions, including the African Development Bank, the World Bank, the Economist Intelligence Unit, the Bertelsmann Foundation and Freedom House, and ranks countries and territories on a one to ten grade index. All sources measure the overall extent of corruption in the public and political sector.
New Zealand tops the field in the 2009 transparency international index, followed by Denmark, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland. In the Arab world Qatar comes first and is ranked 22 nd worldwide, followed by the UAE (30).
Among the world’s poorest performing countries are Iraq (176), Sudan (176), Burma (178), Afghanistan (179) and Somalia (180).
