2008 World Bank Development report cites Tunisia as success story in placing agriculture at the service of development
Tunis, April 2, 2008 (TunisiaOnline) --The latest 2008 World Bank Development report which is the 30 th of its kind, has quoted Tunisia as a “success story” for having been able of putting agriculture at the service of development, as testified by the priority granted to the sector through public spending.
According to the report dubbed “Agriculture for Development”, Tunisia was also able to achieve a constant decrease of poverty in rural areas, as well as in reducing disparities between urban and regional areas.
The announcement was made by one of the co-writers of the report Mr Alain Janjry , an economist from the University of California who also said that Tunisia has a real potential to promote a high value- added agriculture and develop non traditional products. The researcher said that one of the ways of achieving this goal was to reduce dependency from adverse climatic situations, as well as stressing family agriculture by diversifying the later while giving it an increased merchant value.
The report whose main aim is to reduce by half extreme poverty and hunger in the world by 2015, also mentions the fact that 75% of the world's poor live in urban areas , whence the importance played by agriculture in reducing rural poverty and diversifying the economy.
In Tunisia , the World Bank has contributed to a series of governmental projects in the sector of agriculture, especially in the north western part of the country.
