“Luminoso” Gilberto Gil opens “Jazz in Carthage ” in style, and with samba

April 12, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--“Jazz in Cartage” took a flying start on Thursday when Gilberto Gil opened the event whose first part saw the performance of the singer Maria Joao and her partner, the musician Mario Laginha.

The Brazilian singer whose career has spanned over 40 years and who is considered a living legend of samba and latino music in general, mesmerized for two hours the ‘Barcelo' performance hall in Gammarth. The singer who is on a world tour has just flown in from Paris where he gave two performances. After Tunis , his tour will also take him to Spain and Portugal .

Singing in turn some of his newest songs, Gilberto Gil who also happens to be Brazil's Minister of culture(currently on sabbatical leave ), gave a dazzling performance of “No Women no Cry”, as well as several ‘Baio' songs inspired from Arab, Andalusian music.

It is not the first time Gilberto Gil performs in Tunisia , a few years ago he also gave an impressive performance on the scene of the Carthage amphitheatre accompanied by a number of musicians and singers.

This time the artist presented his Tunisian public with a more intimate show, better suited to the melodies he sang. In spite of this intimate note, the public often responded by dancing the samba , at the great delight of the maestro.

Gilberto Gil has so far composed 65 albums, received 12 golden albums, 5 platinum albums, 7 Grammy Awards and sold more than 4 million disks, throughout the world.
