26th edition of the Tunis International Book Fair to be held from April 25 to May 4, 2008 at El Kram exhibition hall
Tunis, April 18, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The 26 th edition of the Tunis International Book Fair is due to be held from April 25 to May 4, 2008 at El Kram exhibition Hall north of Tunis . The event, which is organized by the Ministry of culture and heritage preservation, is one of the highlights of Tunisian cultural life.
A press point was held on Thursday at the International Press Center of the Tunisian External Communication Agency, in Tunis by Mr Boubaker Ben Fraj, the Fair's Director.
Mr Ben Fraj, said that the event's main objectives were the promotion of the Tunisian book, the reinforcement of the international dimension of Tunisian culture, as well as the Fair's opening on Arab and international cultures.
He also announced that a record number of editors will take part in the event , some 1027 editing houses including 83 Tunisian ones, will be represented. The number of exhibitors will reach 319, including 101 Tunisian exhibitors.
To accommodate the growing number of participants expected to attend the event, the Fair's executive board had decided to increase by 10% the surface allocated to exhibitors, he said, adding that the editing houses will represent 31 countries and 5 international organizations.
For the first time in the Fair's history, a special stand will be dedicated to Palestine .
On the other hand, visitors will witness the participation under one stand, of the publications of a great number of new EU countries.
Among the highlights of the book fair is a conference entitled: “From Translation of words to the dialogue of cultures” which is scheduled on May 2, 200.
Encounters with renowned writers are also planned, these include the Egyptian Baha Taher, the French author Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, and the Tunisian -Swedish writer Jonas Hassen Khemiri.
Professionals of the book will also have the opportunity to discuss issues relevant to the sector, during study days dedicated to: “the Crafts of the book”, “the export of books in Tunisia ” , as well as “literary prizes and their role in promoting writing”.
A literary encounter will be centred on the late Mustapha Fersi and will include a series of conferences and accounts on his works and life.
The Fair will open to the public at large on April 26, 2008.
