In an  interview with the daily newspaper “La Presse”, President Ben Ali reiterates his support for President Sarkozy's Mediterranean Union project

 

Tunis , April 27, 2008 (TunisiaOnline) --In an exclusive interview to the French language daily “La Presse”, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali reiterated his support for President Sarkozy's Mediterranean Union project. President Ben Ali also highlighted the “excellent relations between Tunisia and France ” which were able to set up a dense and fruitful cooperation in all sectors”.

Highlighting some of the most promising areas of cooperation between Tunisia and France , President Ben Ali mentioned in particular “the environment, biotechnology, scientific research, and ICT's”.

President Ben Ali expressed his conviction that the Mediterranean is a place of peace, cooperation and security, adding that “ Tunisia and France which share the same vision are determined to work together to put this project into effect.”

In response to a question on how the two countries can help reach a solution to the Israeli Palestinian conflict, President Ben Ali said that “Tunisia shares with France this vision of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East , leading necessarily to the setting up of a sovereign Palestinian State , that will result in the lasting security and stability of all the peoples in the region”.

To a question on the possible remedies to the adverse consequences of rising food and oil prices on the countries of the south , President Ben Ali said that “the time has come for each of our States to make a contribution to the World Solidarity Fund” which Tunisia has called for “as an instrument to fight poverty and exclusion”.

President Ben Ali also commended President Nicolas Sarkozy for his recent decision to grant “a consistent financial support to agriculture in the countries of the south”, adding that “more than ever before, solidarity and co-development must be allowed to govern international relations”.
