President Ben Ali calls for giving new impetus to the World Solidarity Fund

Tunis, April 28, 2008 (TunisiaOnline) --In an address given on the occasion of the dinner hosted in honor of President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday, President Ben Ali reiterated his support for President Sarkozy's initiative for a “Union for the Mediterranean” in which there would be “a wider participation from southern Mediterranean countries” as well as the establishment of the “mechanisms and structures necessary for their implementation”.

President Ben Ali also called for an increased international solidarity in light of the current economic and financial situation characterizing the world today and notably as a result of the result of the drastic increase in food and oil prices.

In this regard, President Ben Ali “called on all countries endowed with oil wealth, to contribute to the effort of international solidarity, by deducting one dollar per barrel of oil to be offered as a contribution to the World Solidarity Fund established by the United Nations following Tunisia 's initiative”.

He also exhorted international financial institution to “grant further attention to human food production, for the right to food is synonymous with the right life, and is an integral part of Human Rights” he said.

President Ben Ali also stressed the need to act through the United Nations and regional and international institutions, “to set up a new agenda that would save the world from economic imbalances”, this is all the more urgent he said as “the world is not in a healthy state”, adding that he was convinced that “France with its rich humanitarian heritage, can assume a major influential role in this regard”.
