Conference on Arab blind women
A conference on Arab blind women between “dream of leadership and obstacles of reality” is organised, on the 3rd-4th instant in Tunis, by Tunisia’s National Union of the Blind (UNAT), under the high auspices of wife of the Head of State and Chairwoman of Arab Women Organisation (AWO), Mrs. Leila Ben Ali.

Opening the conference, Women, Family, Children and Elderly Affairs Minister Sarra Kanoun Jarraya pointed out that Arab blind women are part and parcel of the Arab society which aspires to improve the living conditions of this category and defend its legitimate rights to knowledge and economic and social integration.
She highlighted Mrs. Leila Ben Ali’s keenness to boost joint Arab action and lend all required attention to the promotion living conditions of Arab women with specific needs, out of conviction of her attachment to disseminate the values of justice, solidarity and mutual aid among members of society.
Mrs. Kanoun Jarraya commended the avant-garde role of “Basma” Association for the Promotion of Disabled Employment chaired by Mrs. Leila Ben Ali, a role aimed at integrating this social category into active life.
She specified that since its creation, UNAT ensures all year long training and qualification programmes which have enabled the blind, who represent 13.3% of all disabled, to have access to the labour market.
The agenda of the conference, which is attended by experts from Tunisia, Sudan, Egypt and representatives of Arab organisations active in blind women’s promotion, includes such themes as the role of blind women within family and society, and the blind’s status in international law.
