Environment: by 2014 Tunisia will build 250 “Sustainable Schools”
TUNISIAONLINENEWS- Since 2005, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has set up a nationwide network of sustainable schools in each governorate and the program is still going strong. The initiative is part of a global drive to disseminate a culture of sustainable development.

The program aims to entrench the culture of environmental conservation awareness within the younger generations. According to the daily Arabic language newspaper “Essahafa”, Tunisia has 140 “Sustainable Schools”.
Some of these schools have already been equipped with renewable energies facilities respectively in the regions of Tunis, Bizerta, Medjez El Bab, Jendouba, Kairouan, Mahdia, Hammam Sousse, Sfax and Ben Arous.
According to the same source, the new sustainable schools to be built will be equipped with solar and wind power to meet the needs of schools in water and electricity.
As part of a national strategy for education and environmental awareness which already led to the creation of 3,300 environmental clubs covering 50% of Tunisian educational institutions, the number of “Sustainable Schools” is expected to reach 250 schools by 2014.
