Foreign Affairs Ministry announces death of Hedi Annabi Chief of MINUSTAH

TUNISIAONLINENEWS– After he had been reported missing in Haiti’s capital Port-au Prince  following the violent earthquake that hit the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a communiqué officially announcing the death of Hédi Annabi , Chief of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

The late Hédi Annabi had been reported missing these last days together with about ten of his aides, under the rubble of the headquarters of MINUSTAH after its collapse, until rescue teams found the bodies.

President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali issued instructions to the Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Tunisia to the United Nations Organisation to escort on Sunday UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Haiti to supervise the necessary procedures for the transfer of the remains of the Tunisian diplomat to Tunisia.

The late UN mission Chief in Haiti was among the top Tunisian diplomats to work in the United Nations. He was renowned for his high professional and personal qualities which entitled him to assume important responsibilities as part of the UN organisation’s efforts to reinforce peace and security and carry out humanitarian missions in the world, says the communiqué.

After working in the Foreign Ministry, he also held, a senior position within the Prime Minister’s office and was appointed as Managing Director of Tunisia’s official news agency “Tunis Afrique Presse “(TAP) in 1979.

Hedi Annabi joined the United Nations in 1981 where he was appointed as the deputy Secretary- General for humanitarian Affairs in South East Asia. He also served as Head of peace mission operations in Africa from 1993 to 1996.

He was born in Tunis in 1943 and was the holder of a Bachelor in English from the University of Tunis, as well as political sciences diplomas from the Institut des Sciences Politiques in Paris and the Institut des Hautes Etudes Internationales of Geneva. He had also been decorated as Knight of the Order of the Republic.
