France returns traditional 19 th century marriage costume to Tunisia
TUNISIAONLINENEWS- As part of the twinning between the governorate of Tunis and the Alpes Cotes d’Azur province , a magnificent silver -embroidered 19 th century marriage dress was returned to Tunisia during a ceremony held at the National Heritage Institute (INP) in the presence of the French Ambassador to Tunisia, Mr Pierre Menat.
The garment is the main component of a wedding costume worn by a city bridegroom known as “Qmejja”; it is ornamented with various “Khomsa” (prophylactic hand) motifs and golden ribbons and is lined with silver threads .

The dress which was found two years ago in Belgium was duly authenticated by French and Tunisian experts as originating either from Carthage or from the island of Djerba. It is the second time France returns Tunisian art works.
Last year, an 8 carat gold jewel known as the “Fakrouna” (the tortoise) was returned to Tunisia; the piece will enrich the collections of the “Dar Abdallah” Museum which is due to open within 18 to 24 months.
More than a simple gesture of goodwill, the initiative is a strong symbol of Tunisian, French friendship and cooperation.
