Conference aims at promoting evaluation and accreditation systems for Tunisian universities

Tunis, May 2, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The final conference of the “Tempus Evafor-Tunisia“ project took place at the Tunis Planetarium on Friday in the presence of Tunisian and European experts, the chancellors of Tunisian universities and senior officials in charge of the evaluation and accreditation process of Tunisian universities.

In keeping with the Bologna process launched in 1999, Tunisian universities are currently involved in setting up an evaluation and accreditation system in agreement with international standards.

Chairing the closing conference, Mr Lazhar Bououni, the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technology, stressed the important part played by European partners , engaged in the evaluation of university curricula , an essential stage in anchoring the culture of quality.

He noted that a group of 35 participants directly engaged in the project, was made up in order to gather together all the parties concerned by the accreditation of Tunisian tertiary institutions. He also stressed the role played by the National Evaluation Committee and the Quality Support Program (PAQ), in this process.

The Minister further announced that the ministry was currently engaged in setting up a large external evaluation of all its institutions, which is to be ventilated over the next four years.

He added that in the face of an increasing external competition, Tunisian higher education institutions must improve their management, as well as their capacity to develop a genuine internal culture of quality.

The creation of a national evaluation instance of quality control and accreditation is part of a strategy, he added, that aims at merging these elements, whence the restructuring of the Tunisian university diploma system into the Bachelor, Masters and PhD system,( known as LMD in French.)

The evaluation and accreditation project, along with the greater institutional autonomy of universities and higher education research establishments said Mr Bououni, also dovetails with the Higher Education Law dated February 25, 2008.
