President Ben Ali expresses the hope that the Arab Summit “will achieve positive results”.

Tunis , March 28, 2008- (TunisiaOnline) --In a statement made upon his arrival in Damascus, Syria, where he will take part in the 20th Summit of the Arab League of Nations, on March 29 and 30, 2008, President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali expressed “the hope that the Damascus meeting between Arab Leaders, will offer the possibility of achieving positive results that are likely to meet the expectations and the aspirations of our peoples.”

He also hoped that “the Summit will demonstrate our capacity to interact actively and efficiently with the great issues of the hour, to adapt to world changes and to face the challenges that we are all together, faced with.”

President Ben Ali further expressed his confidence in “our capacity to win these stakes, thanks to the strong resolve that drives our actions and our constant concern to boost and promote joint Arab action, and strengthen solidarity, cooperation and complementarity between our countries”.

Upon his arrival in Syria, President Ben Ali was greeted by Syria’s President Bachar El Assad, the Secretary General of the Arab League of Nations, Mr Amr Moussa and the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

-August 12, 2006- President Ben Ali reaffirms Tunisia’s commitment to the code of personal status, a pioneering legislation adopted in 1956, which has granted Tunisian women equal rights with men. The code has banned polygamy, forced marriages and repudiation.
