Tunisia: next five year plan places emphasis on knowledge economy, services
TUNISIAONLINENEWS- As Tunisia’s parliament readies on Tuesday to debate the country’s forthcoming five year plan (2010-2014), observers are noting that the new development plan will mark a swift mutation of the Tunisian economy towards innovation and the knowledge economy.
Several reforms have already been engaged along 6 axes including an environmentally friendly economy, the creation of competitive poles, the improvement of the country’s business climate, the integration of the economy into the global economy, the preservation of financial balances and the promotion of human resources.
According to the official news agency TAP, the new five year plan hopes to achieve an annual growth rate of 5, 5%. Agriculture should contribute to 4, 9% of the national economy, manufacturing and non- manufacturing industries respectively 18, 6% and 6, 5%, and 70% for services.
The plan will also aim at increasing the per capita income to 8363 dinars (about 6000 US dollars) and to lower the official unemployment rate from 13, 3% in 2009 to 11, 6% by 2014. Unemployment rate among university graduates, one of the country’s major challenges should also decrease from 21, 7% in 2009 to 13, 6% by 2014.
The sources of funding will be provided to an extent of 23% by work productivity, 28,4% by capital productivity and 48,6% by global productivity of production factors.
TAP adds that these objectives were set on the basis of projections tabling on a recovery of the global economy, Tunisia’s positive international rankings, and the comparative edge of several sectors of the Tunisian economy including, health services, ICT, the automobile and aeronautics sectors, as well as the electronic and mechanical segments.
