Tunisia takes part in UNCTAD conference in Geneva
TUNISIAONLINENEWS- Tunisia is taking part from May 17 to 21, 2010, in the annual works of the Commission of Science and Technologies for Development (CSTD) of the UN Conference on Trade and Development “UNCTAD”, in Geneva.
In his address on this occasion, Mr. Mohamed Naceur Ammar, Minister of Communication Technologies, stressed the role of ICT in fulfilling development objectives at the economic, social and cultural levels.
He said that Tunisia is constantly supporting the efforts of the international community to reduce the digital gap which the head of state regards as a development gap, adding that this event is an important stage to assess the achievements carried out in this sector and prepare the strategy to be adopted in the next stage to reach the objectives set in this regard.
This participation is part of Tunisia’s attendance of the UN forum on mid-way assessment of the results of the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) whose final stage was held in Tunis in 2005.
On the fringes of this participation, the minister met with Mr. Hamdoun Touré, International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Secretary General, on preparations for the forum of communication and information technologies for all “ICT 4 All Tunis +5” due to be held in November, 2010.
The minister also reviewed with Universal Postal Union (UPU) Secretary General, Mr. Edouard Dayan, the relations of fruitful cooperation between the UN organization and Tunisia’s postal services and prospects to boost them.
An agreement on cooperation was signed between UPU and Tunisia’s postal services under which a regional technical centre will be set up in Tunis.
In this context, Tunisia is hosting from May 18 to19, 2010, an international conference on the “Future of Postal Stamp”, in Gammarth (north of Tunis). The conference is held by the Tunisian Post, in collaboration with the Universal Postal Union (UP) and the World Association for the Development of Philately (WADP).
