The Presidential Decree No. 206 of 2026, dated August 12, 2026, concerning the extension of the declaration of a buffer border zone, was published in the Official Journal of the Republic of Tunisia (JORT) on Friday.
This decree provides for the extension of the declaration of the buffer border zone for an additional year, starting from August 29 of the current year.
The creation of a “buffer border zone” in Tunisia traces back to Republican Decree No. 230 of 2013, issued on August 29, 2013. Its provisions are renewed each year by successive presidential decrees, the most recent of which have been published in the JORT, in order to regulate and secure the desert border belt of the country.
The buffer border zone covers the desert regions located along the southern, southeastern, and western borders of Tunisia.
The text of the decision adopted in 2013 comprises 12 articles, some of which define the boundaries of the zone, the modalities of entry and exit, as well as the prerogatives granted to the military, security and customs authorities, as well as to local authorities, to ensure the implementation of this decision.
