The regional authorities of Sfax are continuing preparations for the autumn season, with intensified preventive interventions in areas deemed sensitive to the risks of rainwater accumulation and flooding. The objective is to complete all programmed works before the end of August.
Inspection of the most sensitive points
In this framework, the governor of Sfax, Mohamed Hajri, on Tuesday 18 August, accompanied by members of the regional commission for disaster response and relief organization, carried out a field visit to several “blue points”.
This tour aimed to monitor the progress of the works and assess the level of preparedness of the various services in the face of potential weather disturbances.
The visit notably concerned the Sidi Salem River, the Maou River, as well as the Maou River Bridge, where authorities examined the situation of the sites and the pace of interventions intended to improve the evacuation of rainwater and to reduce the risks of rising waters or stagnation.
A deadline set for the end of August
The governor of Sfax stressed the need to complete all programmed works and interventions by the end of August.
He also called for strengthening coordination between the different services and concerned structures in order to raise the level of preparedness and guarantee a rapid response in case of incidents related to heavy rainfall during autumn.
This visit also highlighted the importance of a preventive approach in managing areas exposed to water accumulation, particularly in sectors that have already experienced difficulties in draining rainwater.
The Maou River under intensified surveillance
The authorities have furthermore agreed to intensify interventions at the Maou River to ensure normal and smooth drainage of waters.
This particular attention is explained notably by the link of this river with the Bourguiba belt and by the importance of this axis in the region’s water evacuation system.
The planned interventions include notably the removal of obstacles and the improvement of the condition of drainage canals, in order to limit the risks of rising water levels during episodes of heavy rainfall.
Urgent interventions at the Civil Protection crossroads, at the bus station, and on the seafront
In the same context, the governor ordered the Sfax municipality to intervene immediately in several zones requiring urgent preventive measures.
The sites involved are notably the Civil Protection crossroads, the bus station, as well as Chatt El Kerkennah – the seafront.
These measures aim to prevent the repetition of stagnation and rising water phenomena in these sectors during rainy episodes, through the implementation of the necessary technical and on-the-ground interventions to improve water evacuation.
Enhanced preparation to protect citizens and property
These operations are part of the ongoing monitoring of the preparations of the various regional structures of Sfax in anticipation of the autumn season.
The authorities thus seek to strengthen coordination among the various actors and to implement a preventive approach aimed at limiting flood risks and protecting citizens as well as their property from the consequences of inclement weather.
