On the occasion of the anniversary of the signing, August 28, 1797, of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Tunisia and the United States, one of the oldest agreements still in force in American history, the United States Embassy in Tunisia released a photograph dating from 1959 showing President Habib Bourguiba alongside U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, illustrating a landmark chapter in this historic relationship.
The United States Embassy in Tunisia added that, more than two centuries later, this friendship continues to grow and strengthen. It is today manifested notably through joint military exercises, cooperation in the field of security, and the strengthening of trade ties and investments through programs such as SelectUSA.
It is also demonstrated by university exchange programs, such as Fulbright, which help bring the next Tunisian generation closer to the United States.
