On Friday in Niger, journalist Ibro Chaïbou was released after ten months spent in the Kollo civilian prison, near Niamey, announced by his employer, the private Saraounia television. He was, according to a Nigerien journalists’ organization, the last journalist still placed in provisional detention in the country.
Ibro Chaïbou had been arrested in November with six other journalists for “complicity in disseminating documents likely to disturb public order.” Three of them had been incarcerated: Ibro Chaïbou, Youssouf Seriba, editor-in-chief of the online media Les Échos du Niger, and Oumarou Kané, director of the newspaper Le Hérisson. The latter two had been released in July.
Niger has been led since 2023 by a military regime regularly accused by NGOs of violations of press freedom.
