A medical caravan specialized in ophthalmology and ocular surgery will be organized on September 5, 2026 in the Oueslatia delegation, part of the governorate of Kairouan, as part of a broad cataract screening campaign.
This initiative is organized under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, in collaboration between the Kairouan Regional Health Directorate and the Al Awn Al Moubaracher association, with the aim of bringing specialized health services closer to citizens.
A caravan for the benefit of three delegations
The caravan planned in Oueslatia will benefit the residents of the delegations of Oueslatia, Ain Jloula and Sbikha.
Consultations and examinations will be provided by university medical professionals specialized in ophthalmology and ocular surgery.
The operation aims in particular to identify people with cataracts and to direct cases requiring surgical management.
Four caravans planned in the governorate
The campaign will continue through the organization of four medical caravans covering several areas of the Governorate of Kairouan.
The first caravan was organized on August 29, 2026 in the city of El Ala, for the delegations of El Ala, Hajeb El Ayoun and Haffouz.
The second is scheduled on September 5 in Oueslatia, for the benefit of Oueslatia, Ain Jloula and Sbikha.
The third caravan will take place on September 6, 2026 in the city of Nasrallah. It will involve the delegations of Nasrallah, Menzel Mhiri, Sidi Amor Bou Hajla and Cherarda.
Finally, the fourth caravan will be held on September 12 in the city of Kairouan, at the Intermediate Center and School Medicine, for the benefit of the delegations of Kairouan North, Kairouan South and Chebika.
A targeted screening for people over 50 years old
The screening operations will be preceded by an initial screening of people aged over 50 years.
This step will identify patients requiring specialized examinations, before the subsequent scheduling of free surgical interventions for people diagnosed with cataracts.
These operations will be carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with the Al Awn Al Moubaracher association.
Transport, reception and preparation of patients
The Kairouan Regional Health Directorate is responsible, in coordination with the health districts, the Kairouan governorate and the various stakeholders, for ensuring patient transport as well as organizing their reception, screening and registration.
Beneficiaries will also be prepared in advance by medical and paramedical staff working in basic health centers, health groupings and the concerned health districts.
Bringing specialized care closer to citizens
According to a press release from the Kairouan Regional Health Directorate, this campaign is part of the Ministry of Health’s efforts to improve access to specialized care and to ensure its availability for the different categories of citizens across all regions of the governorate.
The objective is notably to facilitate access to screening and management of cataracts, especially for populations far from specialized hospital structures.
