The periodic meeting of the Regional Commission for Disaster Management in Bizerte, held this Wednesday, reviewed all logistical and human preparations undertaken as a preventive measure to limit potential repercussions of weather disruptions expected at the end of the week, as well as those linked to the rainy season.
Chaired by the governor of Bizerte, Salem Ben Yacoub, he confirmed the decision to keep in permanent session all local commissions for disaster response and rescue organization in the various delegations of the governorate, as well as the regional commission.
All services and involved bodies have been urged to strengthen their coordination and to continue the implementation of field intervention programs, notably preventive operations at all flood-prone points identified, both in residential areas and in professional and educational spaces, to ensure the effectiveness of interventions and to protect people as well as public and private property.
The governor also stressed the need to intensify cleaning campaigns and the maintenance of networks for drainage of stormwater and waterways, while ensuring immediate remediation of any failures affecting other networks, notably those for street lighting, drinking water and sanitation.
In the same frame, the governor of Bizerte renewed his instructions regarding the census of dilapidated buildings and walls and the taking of the necessary measures in this regard, while ensuring support to citizens within a framework of close coordination among the various administrations concerned.
He also confirmed the availability of the necessary stocks of foodstuffs, blankets, mattresses, clothing and tents with the regional committee of the Tunisian Union of Social Solidarity and local committees, especially in areas likely to record substantial rainfall.
Special attention should also be given to the pace of market supply of consumer goods, to the control of distribution channels, and to the fight against monopoly and speculation.
Entrepreneurs were also called upon to speed up the completion of ongoing works, while ensuring to install the necessary signage to inform and protect citizens, as well as safety barriers in high-risk zones.
It should be recalled that duty shifts have been decided at the governorate headquarters, at delegations, municipalities and various administrations to guarantee the effectiveness and speed of preventive and on-the-ground interventions. All participants on this occasion reaffirmed their high level of preparedness to intervene quickly and effectively, at the time and place required.
