Poultry, Fruits, and Meat: Which Products Had the Biggest Price Increases in September?

Written by: Adel Khelifi on October 6, 2026

In Tunisia, inflation reached 5.6% year on year in September, but prices for various products did not rise by the same amount. Here are the main products whose prices rose the most in September 2026. Year-on-year, prices in the “Food and Beverages” group rose by 8.4%.

This rise, which also concerns the average prices of the first nine months of the year to date, is mainly explained by the increase in prices of poultry by 16.5% between September 2025 and September 2026, fresh fruits by 16.3%, sheep meat by 14.6%, beef by 13%, fresh vegetables by 12.9% and fresh fish by 10.4%. Over one year, the prices of fresh fish have risen by 10.4%

Moreover, prices of clothing and footwear products rose by 9.2%. As for everyday household cleaning products, they rose by 5.1%.

For services, the price increase stands at 4.2% year on year, mainly explained by the rise in lodging services by 14.7%.

In response to the rise in the inflation rate, Dr. Aram Belhadj estimates that the main driver of inflation remains primarily food and energy, while core inflation, excluding food and energy, stabilizes at 4.9% for the second consecutive month.

“This confirms that the shock is spreading horizontally within the food basket, without, at this stage, turning into generalized inflation driven by demand,” adds Dr. Belhadj.

And he adds that the most structurally concerning phenomenon lies in the gap between freely priced foods (+9.4%) and price-controlled ones (+0.2%), which widens month by month, thereby accumulating an implicit cost of price support that does not directly surface.
