The gold market in Tunisia is experiencing relative price stability this week, despite fluctuations observed on international markets. This was stated by Wajih Mesfar, president of the Regional Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax, noting that an increase of about 10 dinars was recorded in the price per gram of 24-carat gold.

According to him, the local market is currently experiencing a slowdown in gold jewelry sales, despite price declines in some categories. Meanwhile, jewelry artisans are preparing for the upcoming season by intensifying their manufacturing and preparatory activities.

Gold prices in Tunisia by carat

Discussing the evolution of gold prices, Wajih Mesfar detailed the prices practiced on the Tunisian market, which vary according to the carat number and the state of the gold, whether it is new jewelry or gold intended for refashioning.

According to the details provided by Wajih Mesfar, the price per gram of new 24-carat gold ranges between 407 and 410 dinars, while that of new 18-carat gold varies between 370 and 410 dinars. For used 18-carat gold, the gram trades between 300 and 305 dinars. As for new 9-carat gold, its price sits between 210 and 220 dinars per gram, versus 125 to 130 dinars for used gold of the same category. These gaps reflect the price differences practiced on the Tunisian market according to carat count and the state of the gold.

The official also specified that some merchants are currently looking to clear their old stocks in order to acquire new quantities of gold.

Low demand despite the decline in certain prices

The president of the Regional Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax expressed astonishment at the weakness of demand during this period, while gold prices have fallen compared to their previous levels, according to his assessment.

He explained that this time of year is traditionally devoted to jewelry fabrication and the preparation of the next season. However, the weakness of foot traffic and purchases is currently one of the main features of the local market.

The global price of an ounce of gold fluctuates between 4,106 and 4,116 dollars

On the international market, Wajih Mesfar reported fluctuations in gold prices during the recent period, in a context marked by developments in the Middle East and the Russo-Ukrainian war.

He also mentioned sustained global demand for the precious metal, notably from China.

According to the figures he provided, the price of an ounce of gold on the international market ranges between 4,106 and 4,116 dollars.

He added that the price per gram of 24-carat gold intended for manufacturing is between 394 and 395 dinars on the international market, versus 407 to 410 dinars per gram for new gold on the Tunisian market.

Buying gold: the importance of demanding an invoice

In this context, Wajih Mesfar urged consumers wishing to purchase gold jewelry to systematically demand an invoice with every transaction.

He specified that this document should include several essential details, notably the name of the shop, the weight of the jewelry, its carat count, and the price per gram applied at the time of purchase.

According to him, the invoice holds particular importance when reselling the jewelry, as it provides elements attesting to their provenance, their characteristics, and their acquisition price.
