The Directorate-General for Veterinary Services announced that it had supervised, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a coordination working session devoted to the preparation of an intensive field intervention, focused on vaccination and epidemiological investigation, following the detection of a rabies outbreak in a border area shared by the governorates of Kasserine, Siliana and Le Kef.

She added that this intervention constitutes a pilot field trial, illustrating a new orientation in rapid and effective management of disease outbreaks. This approach rests on a scientific and preventive approach, based on strengthening the sanitary perimeter around the detected outbreak and mobilizing the various human and logistical resources available, in order to consolidate animal immunity, to limit the risks of propagation of the infection and to protect public health.

The Directorate-General for Veterinary Services clarified that these efforts are part of the national “One Health” approach, which relies on the complementarity between different sectors with a view to protecting animal, human and environmental health, preserving livestock, and guaranteeing the sanitary safety of citizens.

This field experience also constitutes a starting point for establishing a new nationwide methodology for managing rabies outbreaks, based on early intervention, rigorous coordination and the global mobilization of resources, in order to strengthen the preparedness of the surveillance and rapid-response system against zoonoses.
