This Thursday, August 14, boxing fans are once again in mourning. After having endured a real ordeal in recent years, Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33.
It was his father Richard who announced the sad news, via a post on Facebook: « It is with sadness that I announce the death of my son Prichard; he has left this world for a better place ».
« I did everything in my power to fulfill his wish, his dream of taking him on vacation to Puerto Rico as he so desired, but that could not be realized. Thank you for all these years of love and prayers. I ask you to continue praying for us, in whatever way, » added the father of the deceased, tragically famous.
Indeed, very promising, the Puerto Rican boxer (who is wearing the red shorts in the photo) had suffered an internal hemorrhage following a bout dating from 2015.
Colon, a « true warrior »
While opposed to Terrel Williams, Colon had taken blows to the back of the head. Subsequently, the Puerto Rican had been placed in a coma for 221 days, i.e., more than seven months, and had not managed to regain all his faculties thereafter. Following this sad announcement, several people paid tribute to him. The man who was undefeated in 16 fights represented « courage, perseverance and extraordinary fighting spirit », according to the president of the World Boxing Organization, Gustavo Olivieri.
Colon was a « true warrior » for the World Boxing Council and the World Boxing Association. On his side, this fight also forever marked Williams’ life.
« I simply do not like this situation. (…) No, really. I think about it every day. I would never have imagined, before it happened, that I could find myself in such a situation », he explained to the Washington Post in July.
