He indicated that he was considering the introduction of new worldwide tariffs targeting the United States’ trading partners, asserting that he had “stronger” alternatives to the measures struck down by the Supreme Court.
The president announced that he would sign a decree imposing worldwide tariffs of 10 percent, noting that the tariffs applied under Section 232 and Section 301 would remain in place, unchanged.
The United States Supreme Court on Friday rejected the broad tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on imported goods under a law intended for use in national emergencies. By this ruling, it dismissed one of his most controversial claims regarding presidential powers, in a decision that is expected to have major repercussions for the global economy.
The decision, adopted by six justices to three, concerns the tariffs established under a law related to emergency powers, including the “reciprocal” tariffs broadly applied to nearly all countries.
