The former Minister of the Interior, Driss Guiga, who served from March 1980 to January 1984, died on Sunday at the age of 102, according to confirmation given to the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) by his son, Moncef Guiga.

Driss Guiga was a political figure and a first-generation lawyer who accompanied the late President Habib Bourguiba in shaping modern Tunisia.

Born on October 21, 1924, in Testour, in the Beja Governorate, Driss Guiga led, in the wake of independence, several public institutions and national bodies. He also served as Tunisia’s ambassador to Bonn in May 1976, in addition to having held several ministerial portfolios under Bourguiba, notably those of Social Affairs, Health, Education, and finally the Interior.

The deceased traced his rich career in memoirs of great value published in 2024 under the title “Driss Guiga in the Footsteps of Habib Bourguiba 1934-1984”, in which he documented major milestones in the history of modern Tunisia.

The funeral of the deceased is planned for tomorrow, Monday, April 20, 2026, in Hammamet (Hammamet Cemetery), after the Al-Asr prayer.
