How Elon Musk Will Continue to Live in an Airstream Trailer?

The choices of the head of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI are always surprising! It was at the All-In Summit that Elon Musk spoke about his current housing.

Operating remotely from Memphis, Tennessee, the entrepreneur explained living in an Airstream caravan installed near one of his projects. This setup would mainly allow him to stay as close as possible to the site of a vast data center intended for xAI’s activities, his company specializing in artificial intelligence.

The site is set to host infrastructure related to the Colossus supercomputer. This way of living in immediate proximity to his companies is not entirely new for Elon Musk, who has previously explained that he slept at certain production sites during particularly intense periods, notably at Tesla.

How much does the Airstream caravan cost?

The term “caravan” may suggest a particularly rudimentary dwelling. The models marketed by Airstream, however, sit in a rather high-end segment.

Recognizable by their rounded aluminum bodies, these American caravans can offer numerous amenities: a kitchen, a bathroom, sleeping areas, and well-crafted furnishings.

Depending on the models and configurations, prices start around 59,000 euros and can exceed 230,000 euros for the most sophisticated versions. The exact model in which Elon Musk says he resides has not been specified, however.

Why had Musk already chosen a tiny house in Texas?

This is not the first time the Tesla chief has spoken about a relatively minimalist lifestyle in light of his wealth.

In 2021, Elon Musk explained in particular that he lived in a small prefabricated house near SpaceX’s site in Boca Chica, Texas. He had also announced the previous year his intention to sell a large portion of his real estate holdings. He subsequently disposed of several properties located in California.

His temporary installation in an Airstream in Memphis thus fits a pattern already observed in the past: having a dwelling in close proximity to his main professional projects, even if it means temporarily abandoning a more conventional home.
