Having held the post of Deputy Minister in charge of the Budget since 2021, Fouzi Lekjaa was named on Friday the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Public Performance.
A new post that illustrates the growing trust placed in him by King Mohammed VI, and which cements the ascent of a figure now at the crossroads of Morocco’s sports, political and economic spheres.
It is a reward for his efforts and notable achievements over the past 12 years, notably in football where he placed Morocco on the world map, and a new responsibility for this central actor in the kingdom’s soft power.
Fouzi Lekjaa will remain the president of the FRMF! According to journalist Izem Anass, Lekjaa will continue to lead the FRMF, as his new duties are not expected to affect his responsibilities in Moroccan football.
Concentration of powers in view of the 2030 World Cup. They should, on the contrary, allow him to concentrate his powers in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal. All of this with the major objective of hosting the final, a cause that has become the flagship objective of the Executive.
As a reminder, the Grand Stade Hassan II under construction in Benslimane, near Casablanca, is in competition with Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu. FIFA’s decision has not yet been communicated.
On the international stage, Fouzi Lekjaa also holds high-profile roles. As the first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the 56-year-old leader also serves as president of CAF’s Finance Commission, vice-president of the commission responsible for organizing interclub competitions and the licensing system for clubs, and as a member of FIFA’s Council.
