On Thursday, the correctional chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance sentenced Deputy Ahmed Saïdani to eight months in prison for harming others via public telecommunications networks, a judicial source told the TAP news agency.

As a reminder, the deputy in the Assembly of the Representatives of the People, Ahmed Saïdani, had been arrested on February 4 under Article 86 of the Telecommunications Code, which criminalizes harm to others via public telecommunications networks.

Article 86 of Law No. 1 of 2001 promulgating the Telecommunications Code states: “Anyone who deliberately commits harm to others or disturbs their tranquility via public telecommunications networks shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of one to two years and a fine of one hundred to one thousand dinars.”

The public prosecutor’s office at the Tunis Court of First Instance had, on February 6, issued a detention warrant against Deputy Ahmed Saïdani, with remand in custody to the correctional chamber.
