The Ministry of Transport has responded to the written question posed by Deputy Halim Bousma regarding inquiries into air transport and the creation of a new airport outside the capital. The response indicates that, in parallel with the restructuring and expansion of Tunis-Carthage Airport, it has been proposed to permanently abandon the project of building a new airport for the time being.
The Ministry added that the Civil Aviation Authority has begun preparing the file for the Tunis-Carthage Airport expansion project, with an estimated capacity of 18.5 million passengers per year. “This capacity can be increased depending on the evolution of passenger traffic. This will allow the Authority to continue operating Tunis-Carthage Airport beyond the year 2050,” reads the Ministry of Transport’s response.
And it added that the contractual term of the concession for Enfidha-Hammamet Airport ends in 2047, which requires considering the possibility of reclaiming it after the expiration of this period, while linking it to Tunis-Carthage Airport by high-speed trains.
“This approach aims to strengthen the capacities of the Authority and the airports to accommodate the growing passenger traffic and respond to evolving demand,” explains the ministry.
