The coaching change has not yet altered the fate of Tunisia’s national football team. For his first official match in charge of the Eagles of Carthage, Mouine Chaâbani could only settle for a draw against Uganda (1-1), Thursday in Radès, on the opening day of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
This small setback extends a winless run since the start of 2026.
Tunisia has had 3 coaches: Sabri Lamouchi, Hervé Renard and now Mouine Chaâbani. None of them has yet won a match with the national team in this spell.
1- Lamouchi, only one World Cup appearance
Sabri Lamouchi had taken the reins of the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. His stint on the Tunisian bench, however, ended after a single match in the tournament. For his debut, Tunisia suffered a heavy defeat to Sweden (1-5).
The Tunisian Football Federation then ended his mission and entrusted the team to Hervé Renard for the rest of the competition.
2- Renard does not restore the situation
The switch of bench did not allow Tunisia to secure its first victory in the tournament. Hervé Renard led the next two matches, against Japan and then the Netherlands.
The Eagles of Carthage lost both matches, 0-4 and 1-3 respectively. Tunisia thus exited the World Cup without a victory and with three defeats in three matches.
3- Chaâbani starts with a draw, but not disappointed!
After Renard’s departure, the Tunisian Football Federation chose Mouine Chaâbani to open a new cycle. The former coach of Espérance de Tunis and RS Berkane signed until 2030 with the aim of rebuilding the national team.
His first official appointment was meant to allow Tunisia to start this new cycle on a positive note. In Radès, the Eagles of Carthage, however, let their lead slip to concede a 1-1 draw with Uganda.
Chaâbani is not responsible for the previous results. He said after the match that there is no great disappointment in the group since it is the first match in this campaign.
Moreover, he inherited a national team coming off a World Cup without a victory and which had already undergone two changes of coach. His first result nevertheless prolongs a run that Tunisia now seeks to end.
The Chaâbani-led squad will have another opportunity to launch his mandate as early as Monday against Botswana, in the CAN 2027 qualifiers. It will be his second match in charge of the Eagles of Carthage.
The victory still awaited
The record is now simple: three coaches since the start of this cycle, three defeats for the first two and one draw for the third. Still no victory for Tunisia.
