Guest on a sports program broadcast on the Al Massar channel, a Libyan journalist and/or commentator asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to sanction the Tunisian national team by forcing it to play behind closed doors, following what he described as “incidents of violence” that, according to him, occurred after the Uganda and Botswana matches as part of the AFCON qualifiers.
The journalist claimed to have sent to members of the Libyan Football Federation videos showing Tunisian supporters throwing bottles after the match, so that the Libyan federation would approach CAF to demand a closed-doors sanction at the Radès Stadium.
He also argued that preventing Tunisian supporters from attending upcoming matches would be a reciprocal measure after what happened to Libyan supporters during a previous match between Libya and Cape Verde in the World Cup qualifiers.
As the Carthage Eagles travel to Tripoli next November to face Libya on the third matchday of the qualifiers, Libyan factions are thus pushing for a rematch to be played behind closed doors. It should be noted that the Libyan national team is also in contention for AFCON qualification and has only one point after two matchdays, behind Tunisia and Botswana, which each have two points.
