A restricted Ministerial Council was held this Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Government Palace in the Kasbah, chaired by the Prime Minister, Ms. Sarra Zaafrani Zenzri. The meeting was devoted to monitoring the progress of several major strategic projects slated to be programmed under the 2026-2030 Development Plan. Among the projects presented is the expansion project of the Tunis-Carthage International Airport.

Currently, the Tunis-Carthage International Airport handles about 60% of the overall traffic of Tunisian airports, with more than 7.2 million passengers per year. It also accounts for more than 75% of the total traffic of Tunisian airports operated by the Civil Aviation and Airports Authority.

The extension and modernization of the Tunis-Carthage International Airport will allow for:

  • increase its capacity to accommodate 18.5 million passengers by the end of 2030;
  • create a new terminal with an estimated capacity of 11 million passengers per year;
  • redesign and partially enlarge the current terminal to raise its capacity to 7 million passengers per year;
  • in addition to Terminal 2, with a capacity of 0.5 million passengers.

The Prime Minister stressed that this project is part of an integrated national vision of the airport system in Tunisia, taking into account technological developments, defining the future roles of the different airports and laying the groundwork for complementarity among them. Digitization constitutes the central pillar, in order to ensure the coherence of investments with the long-term economic and social development objectives, to support tourism and to strengthen Tunisia’s image as a regional hub for air transport.
