The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, and the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Togolese Abroad, Robert Dussey, signed Monday morning at the ministry’s headquarters a memorandum of understanding concerning bilateral consultations between the foreign affairs ministries of the two countries, with a view to developing and diversifying Tunisian-Togolese cooperation, according to a ministry communiqué.

The two ministers agreed to develop a work program for the 2026-2027 period, involving the public and private sectors and covering priority areas of cooperation for both parties. These include, in particular, digital health, higher education, scientific research, training of young diplomats, exchange of experiences in the diplomatic field, as well as military and security cooperation, cybersecurity, medical tourism, information and communication technologies, infrastructures and electricity and hydraulic interconnection networks. This program will receive special attention and follow-up under the supervision of the two ministers.

During an expanded working session bringing together the delegations of both countries and devoted to examining the state of bilateral cooperation relations and ways to strengthen them in various areas, the two ministers saluted the long-standing bonds of fraternity and cooperation between Tunisia and Togo, established since 1965.

They stressed the importance of injecting a new dynamic into these relations, notably by establishing direct communication channels between senior officials and economic actors, in order to explore available cooperation opportunities and to stimulate economic and commercial exchanges between the two countries.

The two sides also examined ways to fully leverage Tunisia and Togo’s accession to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), in order to develop the trade of products and goods available to both countries, notably olive oil and dates on the Tunisian side, as well as cocoa on the Togolese side.

The two ministers affirmed their willingness to finalize and update the bilateral agreements still under study, in order to best prepare for upcoming bilateral milestones. In this context, the Togolese minister invited his Tunisian counterpart to undertake a working visit to Togo to monitor progress achieved in several areas of cooperation.

On a multilateral level, the two ministers congratulated each other on the convergence of their countries’ positions on major African and international issues, particularly those related to the reform of the African Union system, its governance, and the strengthening of Africa’s common action. They also mentioned coordination within the United Nations Security Council and the International Organization of La Francophonie.

They finally reaffirmed their commitment to pursue regular consultations during conferences and international and regional meetings, as well as to mutually support their countries’ candidatures for high-level positions within regional and international bodies and organizations.
