The National Institute of Meteorology has placed all governorates of the Republic, with the exception of Kasserine, at a high alert level for Wednesday, August 26 and Thursday, August 27, 2026.
According to the vigilance map published this Wednesday by the Institute, the weather will be hot, with sirocco winds, and with the local formation of storm cells in the afternoon, with rain in some areas.
Several categories of people who are particularly vulnerable
The Institute warned that the risks associated with extreme heat are greater for children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses or mental disorders, as well as for those who regularly take medications.
People living alone are also among the categories urged to exercise heightened vigilance.
Athletes and people working outdoors are, for their part, particularly exposed to the risks of dehydration and heat stroke.
The main symptoms of heat stroke
The Institute reiterates that heat stroke can manifest with a body temperature exceeding 40 degrees, accompanied in particular by reddening and drying of the skin, headaches, nausea and intense thirst.
In the most serious cases, a loss of consciousness can also occur.
Regularly drinking and avoiding the hottest hours
In light of this situation, the Institute recommends drinking water several times during the day, even in the absence of thirst, and ensuring regular hydration of the body.
It also advises avoiding non-essential outings during the hottest hours, especially between 12:00 and 16:00.
Limit physical exertion
If you must go out, it is recommended to use sun protection and, as much as possible, to spend between two and three hours per day in air-conditioned spaces.
The Institute also calls to reduce sporting activities, particularly intense physical exercises, during periods of high heat.
Emergency number 198
In case of heat-related health problems, the National Institute of Meteorology recommends contacting a physician or requesting emergency services at the number 198.
Thus, vigilance remains in force across nearly the entire country during these two days, in a context combining high temperatures, sirocco and the risks of local storms.
