From this week, the United Kingdom will ban access to social networks for minors under 16, Keir Starmer said Monday, calling the measure necessary to “protect our children,” while acknowledging the difficulties in enforcing it.
The Prime Minister defended an “important step” for the country and families, at a press conference from Downing Street, three days ahead of a crucial election for his leadership of the Labour Party and the country, where he is increasingly contested.
This announcement comes at the end of a national consultation that has become the country’s second-largest, with around 116,000 contributions, according to Downing Street. About 91% of the parents who responded said they supported such a ban.
Several countries, including Australia, a pioneer in this area, and Indonesia, have already put such a ban in place. Canada has announced its intention to do the same, and a similar bill is being studied by the French Parliament for those under 15 years of age.
