Wajih Mesfar, ,president of the Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax , stated that gold prices in Tunisia had remained stable compared to the last few weeks, despite the rise of the ounce on international markets. He, however, indicated that prices on the local market could rise in the coming days.

The ounce of gold climbs to 4,160 dollars

Wajih Mesfar clarified that the global price of an ounce of gold had reached nearly 4,160 dollars, versus about 4,034 dollars last week.

He added that central banks were showing growing interest in strengthening their gold reserves over the coming twelve months, which, according to him, confirms that the precious metal remains a safe haven for investors.

The president of the Chamber of Jewelry Artisans of Sfax emphasized that the global increase did not yet clearly reflect on the Tunisian market. Prices thus remained stable, at levels similar to those of the past weeks, though they have now begun an upward trend.

Wajih Mesfar expects an increase in gold prices in Tunisia in the coming days, if the global ounce price stays at its current level.

Prices of gold 18, 24 and 9 carats

Regarding the prices practiced on the market, Wajih Mesfar indicated that the gram of 18-carat gold traded between 360 and 370 dinars, and could reach 420 dinars depending on the weight and the design of the jewelry.

He explained that the price per gram was generally higher for small-sized jewelry, due to the profit margin applied by the merchant on each gram.

The gram of 24-carat gold costs, for its part, about 392 dinars, after having risen in the last two days. The price per gram of 9-carat gold ranges between 190 and 210 dinars.

White gold at the same price as yellow gold

Wajih Mesfar confirmed that white gold was sold at the same prices as yellow gold. According to him, its visual resemblance to silver contributed to lowering its perceived value among some consumers, although its price is identical to that of yellow gold.

Regarding silver, he indicated that its price had risen in the last period, reaching close to 14 dinars per gram, before falling back to around 5 dinars.

Wajih Mesfar finally stressed that investing in gold remained profitable and a way to realize profits, whereas it was previously mainly viewed as a simple saving tool.

He thus encouraged the purchase of gold, deeming it a more advantageous option than holding cash.
