In Algeria, the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies announced the recording of a third new historic peak in electricity demand, reaching 21,650 megawatts, on August 17, 2026 at 14:21. This record comes amid an exceptionally hot heatwave, accompanied by high humidity in the coastal regions, affecting several provinces (wilayas) of the country.
This new peak represents an increase of 272 megawatts compared to the record set on July 13, and 474 megawatts above the previous record level recorded on July 12, 2026.
The Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies explained that these historic increases in electricity consumption are due to the intensive use of particularly energy-intensive devices, notably air conditioners, by both households and by public and private establishments. This consumption reaches its highest level during peak daytime hours, notably between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
