The Embassy of Japan in Tunisia announced, on Wednesday, that a wind energy production project in El Fahs, in the Zaghouan Governorate, with a capacity of 75 megawatts, has been officially selected in July 2026 to benefit from a subsidy from the Japanese government, under the Carbon Credit Exchange Mechanism (MCC) based on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The project will be implemented by a Nippo-Norwegian joint venture bringing together Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, as the beneficiary entity of the Carbon Credit Exchange Mechanism, and the company Scatec.
According to data released by the Embassy of Japan, the facilities planned in El Fahs are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 88,367 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year.
The Carbon Credit Exchange Mechanism had already enabled, in April 2026, the commissioning of two solar photovoltaic plants with a capacity of 50 megawatts each, in the governorates of Tozeur and Sidi Bouzid.
Other solar projects are also under way within the same mechanism. Among them is a 100-megawatt project in Sidi Bouzid, still in development, as well as a 130-megawatt project in Gabès, selected in February 2026.
These projects are part of efforts to strengthen Tunisia’s ability to produce renewable energy, to support the energy transition, and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
These investments could also create jobs during the construction phases of the projects, then in operation and maintenance activities after their commissioning, even though their overall contribution to employment remains limited.
