The Tunisian defender of OGC Nice, Ali Abdi, delivered notable statements about the period leading up to the World Cup, saying that he had contemplated prioritizing his club’s fixtures over joining the Tunisian national team.
In his remarks, the player explained that he wished to stay in Nice in order to participate in decisive matches to keep the club in the top tier, deeming that he could not abandon his team at such an important moment of the season.
“I did not want to go to the World Cup. I told Florian Maurice: “I’m staying.” I cannot tell the club that pays me: “I want to go with Tunisia and I will let the squad fight to stay up.”,” he said.
Ali Abdi also stressed the human dimension of his decision, adding: “Could a man leave his family at the last minute? I said: “I’m not doing that.””
