The Director-General of the National Center for Adult Education, Hichem Ben Abda, announced on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the integration of five new pathways into the literacy program.
In a statement to National Radio, on the occasion of a workshop organized by the Center for the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, he specified that these new pathways include, notably, the “second chance” program, implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Education, as well as a “new chance” pathway devoted to professional training and employment.
The official also highlighted the preventive role of literacy through a program that heavily relies on available human resources. He noted a staffing shortfall, while the Center aims each year to reach between 20,000 and 25,000 illiterate people.
He added that the Center currently has 845 contracted teachers and 114 tenured teachers, a workforce deemed insufficient in light of around 1.7 million illiterate people in Tunisia, according to his statements. He stressed the need to combine the efforts of all concerned parties.
Hichem Ben Abda also indicated that the workshop aims to train inspectors and teachers in the areas of road safety, prevention of domestic accidents and first aid.
