The life of William Troost-Ekong, former Nigeria captain and current defender of Al-Ahli Doha, has taken a new turn. The Nigerian star announced his conversion to Islam in Qatar.
Troost-Ekong appeared in a video widely circulated on social media in which he pronounces the profession of faith.
The images quickly sparked numerous reactions in the sports circles in Qatar as well as in the Arab and African world.
A Rich European Career
At 33 years old, Troost-Ekong has had several experiences in the major European leagues, notably with Udinese in Serie A and with Watford in the Premier League.
After his time in Europe, the defender moved to the Gulf in 2024 by signing with Al-Khaleej, in Saudi Arabia, before continuing his journey in Qatar with Al-Ahli Doha.
His Record with the Super Eagles
Troost-Ekong has played 83 matches with the Super Eagles between 2015 and 2025, scoring eight goals in total. He notably reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria and was named the best player of that edition.
The former captain of the Super Eagles had announced his international retirement in November last year, after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Finally, it should be noted that Troost-Ekong joined Al-Ahli Doha in January 2026, coming from Al-Kholood, on a free transfer. He signed a one-and-a-half-year contract.
