Beja: Desilting Wadis and Cleaning Hydraulic Structures Ahead of the Rainy Season

Written by: Adel Khelifi on October 16, 2026

As part of preparations for the rainy season, several field interventions have been carried out in the Béja Governorate to proceed with the dredging of wadis and the cleaning of hydraulic structures and stormwater drainage canals.

These operations, included in the programs of the Ministry of Equipment and Habitat, concern in particular classified roads and urban areas. The works are carried out by a company acting on behalf of the Directorate of Urban Waters.

Interventions on several road axes

The works notably focused on the dredging of the hydraulic structure located at the Khalled Wadi, on Local Road No. 703, as well as on the cleaning and dredging of the structure located at the El Hammar Wadi, on the old National Route No. 5.

Drainage canal cleaning operations have also been carried out on National Route No. 5, specifically at kilometer points 38.5 and 56.5.

These interventions aim to facilitate the flow of rainwater and to reduce the risks of water accumulation on road surfaces during heavy rainfall.

Béja, Nefza and Medjez El Bab also involved

Similar operations had previously been carried out in several localities of the governorate, notably in the towns of Béja, Nefza and Medjez El Bab.

These works are part of a preventive approach designed to strengthen the capacity of hydraulic and road infrastructure to withstand episodes of heavy rainfall.

The objective is, in particular, to limit flood risks, improve runoff water evacuation, and reduce traffic disruptions that could occur during bad weather.

Through these interventions, the relevant services continue maintenance and preparation of the infrastructures in the Béja Governorate, in anticipation of upcoming precipitation.
