Tunisia: Planned Price Cuts in Supermarkets to Support Purchasing Power

Written by: Adel Khelifi on October 20, 2026

The Ministry of Trade and Export Development is examining the possibility of implementing price reductions on certain consumer products in the coming days. This initiative was at the center of a meeting held this Monday, October 19, 2026, between the Minister of Trade, Samir Abid, and representatives of major retailers.

According to a ministry press release, this approach aims to preserve the purchasing power of citizens, in a context where controlling prices of consumer products remains a major concern.

Price reductions under study

The meeting allowed examining the possibilities of reducing prices on certain products, as well as questions related to market supply, price evolution and regulation.

At this stage, the ministry has not specified which products could benefit from these reductions, nor their scope or exact date of application. These are therefore measures still under study and not yet officially enacted price cuts.

The ministry emphasized that this meeting falls within a participatory approach involving public authorities and the private sector.

It also stressed the importance of close collaboration with professionals in the large-scale distribution sector, particularly in exceptional circumstances, in order to contribute to price control and to the regularity of market supply.

In a previous statement given to Tunisia Numérique, Hédi Baccour, president of the National Chamber of Large Stores, indicated that the quantities of products destined for large distribution remained comparable to those recorded during the same period of the previous year.

Regarding the difficulties faced by certain consumers in obtaining essential goods, notably sugar and flour, he explained that deliveries were gradually returning to their usual pace after the summer season, characterized by high consumption.

Hédi Baccour also noted that the disruptions observed at some points of sale were mainly related to logistical constraints affecting distribution.

According to him, the supply situation did not raise particular concern at this stage.

Awaiting details on the proposed reductions, upcoming announcements from the ministry and from large retailers will determine the products involved and the modalities for applying any price cuts.
