Major Tunisian hypermarkets will apply, on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, 2026, new reductions on certain vegetable oils and melted cheeses. The amounts announced by the Ministry of Trade and Export Development can reach 7 dinars per bottle of oil and 1.8 dinars per box of cheese. But these maxima are not granted to all products within the same family: formats, references, and exclusions make all the difference at checkout.
This operation, prepared with the large-scale retailers, fits into the program of occasional discounts aimed at supporting purchasing power. For the saving to be real, the consumer must especially compare the final price per equivalent quantity, and not just the displayed discount amount.
Key Points
Dates: Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, 2026, in participating large supermarkets.
Melted cheeses: discount of 0.8 to 1.8 DT per box for certain 8- or 16-serving references. Prepared foods are excluded.
Vegetable oils: discount of 1.5 to 7 DT per container of 1.8 or 5 liters, depending on the products chosen. Corn and sunflower oils are excluded.
To verify: the exact reference, the price after discount, the quantity and the terms displayed in the store.
Which products actually benefit from the discounts?
| Family | Eligible formats | Discount announced | What is not included |
| Melted cheeses | Boxes of 8 or 16 portions | 0.8 to 1.8 DT per box | Prepared foods and references not selected |
| Vegetable oils | Containers of 1.8 or 5 liters | 1.5 to 7 DT per container | Corn and sunflower oils, as well as references outside the promotion |
The ranges come from the ministry’s press release, relayed notably by National Radio on October 29. It does not provide, in the publicly available information consulted, an exhaustive table attributing to each brand and each volume a precise reduction amount. A five-liter can does not automatically benefit from the maximum seven dinars discount. Likewise, not all boxes of sixteen portions grant a reduction of 1.8 dinars.
Ramzi Trabelsi, director of the National Observatory of Supply and Prices, specified that hypermarkets would constitute the first stage of this operation, before an extension announced to other retailers in the formal circuit. The ministry speaks of “periodic and variable” decreases: this is not a general and permanent price reduction.
Compare per litre and per portion: the real calculation for the basket
For oil packaged in 1.8 liters or five liters, the most useful comparison is the price paid per liter after the discount. A purely illustrative example: if a five-liter container, normally sold at 25 DT, shows an effective discount of 5 DT, the price paid drops to 20 DT, i.e., 4 DT per liter. Another format may remain less advantageous even though the displayed discount is higher in absolute value.
For melted cheese, the same principle applies per portion. A discounted box of eight portions does not necessarily become cheaper than a box of sixteen: it all depends on the final price and the number of portions. The comparison is even more relevant if the weight of each portion differs, in which case the price per kilogram becomes a better reference.
How to do the right calculation in-store?
Oil: final price paid ÷ bottle volume in liters = actual price per liter.
Cheese: final price paid ÷ number of portions = average cost per portion; also check the total weight.
Example: 20 DT after discount for 5 liters yields 4 DT per liter. This example is a methodological calculation, not an official announced price.
A useful price drop, but limited to certain references
A temporary discount can ease the bill for households that had already planned this purchase. However, it does not amount to a general reduction in the cost of living: the quantities available, the number of participating stores, the initial price of each reference, and the extent of the operation determine the real benefit for consumers.
Before moving, it is prudent to consult the prospectus or the store display, when available. In-store, the consumer can note down or photograph the price tag before paying, then compare the amount shown to that on the receipt. In case of a discrepancy, a request for verification with customer service often helps avoid losing the announced advantage.
What the ministry also announces for the coming days
The head of the National Observatory of Supply and Prices mentioned the upcoming arrival of additional quantities of imported rice to meet demand. He also recalled that shrimp prices are not administered and can vary with supply and demand. These details do not constitute additional discounts confirmed for the weekend of October 31 and November 1.

The right question isn’t “up to how many dinars in discount?”, but “what is the actual cost of the product I am buying, for the same quantity?”. The maximum announced draws attention, while the price after discount and the choice of references measure the gain.
The overall effect on purchasing power can only be evaluated with the full list of products, the starting prices, and the volumes actually sold. For this weekend, the four checks remain: verify eligibility, compare units, respect the dates, and check the receipt.
