Poland officially joins the EU initiative to build mega AI centers, marking a new step in its strategy to develop AI infrastructure and aiming to become one of the leading AI technology hubs in Europe.
On July 28, Poland’s Deputy Minister for Digital Affairs, Dariusz Standerski, announced that he had signed a joint procurement agreement, thereby making Poland a member of the program coordinated by the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).
According to Standerski, Poland plans to build a mid-sized AI supercenter capable of operating at least 75,000 AI accelerators once completed. As part of the EU plan, the first phase of selection will select seven AI supercenters, of which four will be medium-sized and three large-scale. The signing of contracts is expected in early 2027, and the centers are planned to be operational from 2028.
To implement this project, the Polish government has pledged to invest more than 400 million zlotys (approximately €93 million) and is negotiating with companies to form a consortium responsible for operating the facility.
Standerski indicated that private consortia will be tasked with investing in the AI supercenters, constructing them, and running them. Government funding will be used to prepay the computing capacity of the system, ensuring its optimal operation upon commissioning.
Under the proposed model, Poland and the EU would each use 17% of the center’s computing capacity over a five-year period, while the remaining 66% would be commercially operated by a private consortium to provide services to businesses and research institutions.
To boost its chances of being selected by the EU, Poland is encouraging cooperation with other member states. According to Standerski, Warsaw is finalizing a cooperation agreement with the Czech Republic, has received support from Lithuania, and is continuing discussions with several other partners within the EU.
The mega AI centers initiative is part of the EU strategy to strengthen high-performance computing capabilities, to develop large-scale AI models, and to enhance the bloc’s competitiveness in the global AI race.
